Our Community: Administration

Parents expect and receive responsive, thoughtful, effective, and efficient action from the Spruce Street School administrative team. This group is in charge of leading the school through the most exciting transition of growth and relocation in its 20-year history.

Briel Schmitz has been Spruce Street School's director since 2002. She has ten years' experience as a classroom teacher, both as a bilingual first grade teacher in the Houston public schools (through Teach For America) and at University Child Development School (UCDS) in Seattle, where she also designed and coordinated a residency program for beginning teachers. Briel studied Education Policy as an undergraduate at Brown University, and also holds a master's degree in Administration and Policy Analysis from Stanford.

Deborah Bartlett is our Development Director, helping the Board and several parent committees raise funds to support Spruce Street School. She grew up in Louisiana but happily traded the humidity and mosquitoes for the mountains and the water of Seattle. She comes to Spruce Street School with a Masters in Environmental Education from Lesley College and 11 years teaching experience. Deborah has worked here before at camp and as the Admissions Director (2006). When not at Spruce Street School, Deborah loves to travel, play, read, hike, and bike with her husband and son.

Jane Davis-Ward, our Office Manager, has brought her calm and supremely competent presence to Spruce Street since 2003, juggling billing, greeting visitors, answering questions over the phone and comforting children in need of Band-Aids without missing a beat. Jane grew up in Berkeley and graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a double major in Spanish and Art History. She has also completed graduate studies in Art History at the University of Washington and served as the Director of Flury & Company Gallery here in Seattle.

Kate Gengo, helps run the office and front desk Tuesdays and Fridays. A transplant from NYC and a former professional Inline skater, Kate taught after school programs for over 10 years in NYC’s public and private schools. Her happy spirit and outgoing personality are attributed to her BFA in Musical Theatre from Webster University, her passion for the outdoors and her love for yoga. After traveling as an extreme sports athlete, her passions grew to rock climbing, and mountaineering which lead to a career in the Outdoor Industry where the Pacific Northwest was calling her name. She spends her free time peak bagging, vertical rock scaling, glacier/volcano hiking and back country snowboarding. She volunteers as a rock climbing instructor for kids at local rock gyms and is also the rock wall support staff at Spruce Street School.

Suzie Hanson has been a vital member of the Spruce Street community since 1998. Her title, Assistant Director and Director of Admissions, only begins to describe her role: she supervises the Extended-Day Program, serves as our community relations liaison, coordinates countless school operations and functions, and still finds time to sit and talk with children. Suzie grew up near Boston and graduated from the University of Vermont, where she majored in Education. She enjoys spending time with her young son, daughter and husband exploring the many cultural and outdoor opportunities in Seattle.
