Our Community: Board of Trustees

Parents are welcome to attend and provide input at monthly meetings of the Spruce Street School Board of Trustees. The Board is responsible for the educational, financial, and legal well-being of the school. The Board includes current parents, alumni-parents, staff, and community members. Board members are elected for three-year terms. Download our Annual Report.


Joanna Bargeron is mom to one Spruce Street School student and one Spruce Street School alumna. She works as the Associate Director of Development for Ashesi University Foundation, building a community of support for Ashesi University in Ghana. Joanna has an MPA in non profit management and has served as chair and treasurer for the board of Seattle Midwifery School.

 


Adam Cappio has two daughters at Spruce Street School. Professionally, Adam has worked for RealNetworks for 14 years, most recently directing engineering and innovation in their multimedia products group. He enjoys hiking, skiing, and sailing. He lives in Queen Anne with his wife Gretchen, two daughters, and two yellow Labs.

 

 


Alexa Carver (Secretary) is a parent to three children, two of whom currently attend Spruce Street School. Alexa is on the Spruce Street School Board for her second stint, after a 4-year term during the school's transition from Yale to Virginia. Alexa has her Masters in Not-for-Profit Leadership from Seattle University and has formerly worked as a teacher, administrator and consultant in elementary schools. A native New Yorker, Alexa enjoys hiking, skiing and running.

 


Simon Daniels has two children, one of whom is a former Spruce Street School student. Simon served as parent association representative on the board for the two years, and joined the board as a full member two years ago. Simon works for Microsoft, as a lead program manager in the Windows user experience group where he is responsible for the company's typefaces. He's served on the board of the non-profit Society of Typographic Aficionados (www.typecon.com) and is on the board of the Association Typographique Internationale (www.atypi.org) - both organizations organize annual typography conferences, and advocate on behalf of typeface designers.


Jennifer Duncan (President) and her husband Pete Hurtado are parents of three daughters: one in her fifth year at Spruce Street School, one in her first year at Spruce Street School and one just starting preschool. Jennifer works part time as a Senior Attorney and Land Tenure Specialist for Landesa, a Seattle-based NGO. She graduated from Middlebury College and the University of Washington School of Law. Jennifer especially enjoys time at home in Fremont with her family, friends, dog, cat and chickens.

 


Christine Hill and husband Scott are the parents of two Spruce Street School students, one in the oldest level and one in the mid level. Christine has both an entrepreneurial and corporate background as she and Scott own and operate Evolution Press Inc, a specialist letter press printing company, while Christine is in her ninth year as a business strategist in Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Division. Originally from Canada (Scott hails from New Zealand) Christine and the family enjoy the various outdoor activities that the Pacific Northwest has to offer.

 


Ned Jursek and his wife Brita are the parents of two current Spruce Street School students, one in the oldest level and one in the mid-level. Ned is a former State Prosecutor who recently opened his own solo criminal defense practice. He enjoys backpacking and skiing. Ned is a former board member of Community Lunch on Capitol Hill, a non-profit that focused on providing meals to homeless youths.

 

 


Elham Kazemi and husband Mark Purcell are the parents of two current Spruce Street School students in the mid-level. Elham is an associate professor of mathematics education at the University of Washington. She studies designs for professional education that support children’s mathematical learning. She is enjoying becoming a runner and learning how to knit.

 

 


Matthew Reid-Schwartz and his wife Sara Nickerson are parents of one current Spruce Street School student and one Spruce Street School graduate. Matthew is a musician and a member of the Seattle band, Kinski. He has his MSW from the University of Washington and has formerly worked as a counselor and teacher. He has served on the board of FamilyWorks, a family resource center and food bank in Wallingford, his neighborhood.

 


John Smith(Vice President) is the parent of two current Spruce Street School students. John is a Principal and Partner at Social Market Strategies where he provides strategy consulting and facilitation for nonprofits and foundation executives and their boards of directors. In his free time, John enjoys traveling, soccer, and fishing.

 

 


Tonia Steed (Parent Association ex-officio representative) and her husband Vic Bondi are parents to a moving-on student in the oldest level. Tonia works part-time as the Editorial Lead for Resources Online, resourcing and managing large Web and technical content projects for firms such as Microsoft. She has a Ph.D. in Drama and Critical Theory, and has acted, taught, written, edited, and managed projects in the high tech industry in her checkered career. She has also served on advisory boards of a number of nonprofit arts organizations and for years was a volunteer mentor at First Place, a Seattle school for low-income and homeless children. Tonia and her family have lived in Pittsburgh and New York since her daughter was born, but now make their home in Seattle’s Bryant neighborhood with their Golden Retriever, Jaz.


Harry Teicher is the parent of a moving on student at Spruce Street School. Harry and his wife Tammy Morales plan to fill the void with two younger siblings. Thus they will be a part of Spruce Street School until at least 2021. Hailing from the mighty Jersey Shore, Harry has lived in Seattle for 20 years looking for a good pizza. After residency and fellowship at the University of Washington, he has been a gastroenterologist in private practice in Burien since 1999. He also is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology of the UW School of Medicine. He and his family enjoy cooking, traveling, sports, playing music, and discovering the world. Currently he is honing his guitar and Spanish skills with the goal of living in Spain part-time where his children will immerse themselves in local culture while his wife will dance flamenco and he will play in a Bruce Springsteen tribute band.


Liane Yukawa (Treasurer) is the parent of twin girls who are both in their final two years at Spruce Street School. Liane has spent the last 20 years in the insurance industry and has earned both her CPCU and AU designations. She is currently working for Munich RE as a Property Facultative Reinsurance Underwriter. A Seattle native, Liane enjoys baking and cooking for her family and friends (her largest fans), golfing and swimming.
