Community: Board of Trustees
Parents are welcome
to attend and provide input at monthly meetings of the Spruce Street School
Board of Trustees. The Board is responsible for the educational, financial,
and legal well-being of the school. The Board includes current parents,
alumni-parents, staff, and community members. Board members are elected
for two-year terms. Download our Annual

Mary-lynn
Ballew (Development Committee Chair) is parent of two Spruce
Street School students. Mary-lynn enjoys participating in the school community,
entertaining friends and family, creating visual art, and doing outdoor
activities.
Karen
Campbell is a parent of a Spruce Street School student. Karen teaches
3-6 year olds at The Learning Tree Montessori School on Capitol Hill.
She is also a Washington state certified teacher for K-8 and has been
in the education field for 13 years. When not involved with family or
work she likes to bike around her neighborhood, play soccer, watch baseball
and drink coffee in the early morning with a good book.
Paul
Carr (Vice President) is a parent of a Spruce Street School
student. Paul leads the Healthcare Properties team at CB Richard Ellis'
Seattle office. Paul helps hospitals, clinics, labs, and investors buy,
sell, or lease health care related properties in the Puget Sound region.
Prior to his real estate profession, Paul was a regional manager for a
national health care provider. Paul has undergraduate and graduate degrees
from Stanford and UW, and he enjoys skiing, cycling, hiking, and sailing
his schooner-canoe.
Simon
Daniels (Parent Association Treasurer) is a parent of a Spruce
Street School student. Simon works for Microsoft, as a lead program manager
in the Windows International group where he is responsible for the company's
typefaces. He's served on the board of the non-profit Society of Typographic
Aficionados (www.typecon.com) and was recently elected to the board of
the Association Typographique Internationale (www.atypi.org) - both organizations
organize annual typography conferences, and advocate on behalf of typeface
designers.
Steve
Griggs (Secretary) is a parent of a Spruce Street School student.
Steve holds an undergraduate degree in Saxophone Performance from the
University of Illinois, an MBA in Management Information Systems from
Pace University, and a Certificate in Arts Management from the University
of Washington. Steve has worked in clinical research systems at Pfizer,
Immunex, at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He continues to perform
jazz in local clubs and has released three CDs on his record label Hip
City Music.
Courtney
Hashimoto is a parent of a Spruce Street School alumni. He served
as Board Treasurer for five years and is still on the Finance Committee.
Courtney has worked for Washington Mutual Bank for four years and has
recently assumed a new position as the National Credit Manager for Specialty
Finance, a new business line. Courtney's hobbies include playing guitar
and singing, physical fitness and cooking.
Henryk
Hiller is a parent of a Spruce Street School alumni. He is an attorney,
currently serving as vice-president at Knowledge Mosaic LLC, a company
publishing legal research web sites. He has also taught sociology at Seattle
University, the University of Washington, and Highline Community College.
His daughter, Sienna, attended Spruce Street for 6 years.
Valerie
Kampe (Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair) is a parent of
two Spruce Street School students. Valerie brings 20+ years of investment
experience to her work on Spruce Street School's board. She has consulted
to public and corporate pension plans; managed mutual funds; directed
portfolios for individuals, families, trusts, and foundations; and was
the chief financial officer of an import company. She previously served
as treasurer on the board of a non-profit childcare center. A Chartered
Financial Analyst, Valerie recently co-founded Kaufman Kampe Advisors
LLC, an investment and financial planning firm.
Peggy
Pahl is a parent of a Spruce Street School student. She is also a
Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for King County, working in the Civil
Division. Her legal work focuses on issues related to municipal finance,
the enforcement of civil rights, real estate, and bankruptcy. Peggy has
worked as a volunteer coordinator and administrative director for Safeplace,
a rape crisis/battered women program in Olympia. She has also served a
board member for Safeplace and the Olympia YWCA. She'd rather be playing
soccer, knitting or doing yoga.
Marianne
Picha works as the 4th - 8th grade Division Head at Seattle Country
Day School. She has been a division head there for the past three years.
Prior to that, Marianne worked at Lakeside School as Director of Communications,
as well as a teacher, advisor, and college counselor. She also worked
as an administrator and dorm parent at Annie Wright School in Tacoma.
Marianne earned a BA from Western Washington University in Communications
and an MA from Antioch in Business Management. She likes kids, cooking,
cross-country skiing, and being with family.
Adam
Rauch is a parent of a Spruce Street School student. He grew up in
Cleveland, went to Northwestern University, and came out to Seattle to
work in the software field. He is currently a partner at LabKey Software,
a consulting company focused on building systems that help scientists
collect, analyze, and share research data. His hobbies include playing
bass & singing in a bluegrass band, snowboarding, biking, and traveling
with his family.
Kate
Schultz (President) is a parent of two Spruce Street School
alumni. She served on the board of KapKa School for 7 years and is currently
on their personnel committee. In her previous life she was a physical
therapist and currently works part time for husband Jim's business Online
Banking Report. She loves to walk her Vizsla Iowa, play tennis & racquetball,
travel, and read.
Stephen
Starling (Facilities Committee Chair) is a parent of a Spruce
Street School student and alumni. Stephen is the Design Principal for
Schreiber Starling & Lane Architects where his firm provides public
sector architecture with a particular emphasis on higher education facilities.
