Admissions: Tuition Assistance

As a reflection of our commitment to socioeconomic diversity, Spruce Street School has one of the highest percentages (15-20% of our total tuition) of student financial aid in Seattle-area independent schools. For 2006-2007, 30% of our students received tuition assistance with an average award of $8,200.

Our annual auction and contributions from supporters of Spruce Street provide resources to our tuition assistance. In addition, Spruce Street School has been the recipient of a five year grant from the Pearl Jam Foundation to support this fund.

Financial assistance to Spruce Street School is based on need. A Tuition Assistance application is included in the school application packet.

Financial Aid Policy

Goal: Financial aid will be used to attract and fund students who add to the school’s goals of maintaining age and gender balance, diversity in all areas, and compatibility between students and the school’s mission statement. Due to the changing profile of each year’s student population, the priorities might change slightly from year to year. Financial aid will be spread as evenly as possible across the entire school population to ensure that it does not cluster in any one age group.

Process: Applicants for financial aid will fill out a financial aid application with complete financial disclosure. Based on this information, the director will determine the appropriate amount of financial aid to be given. This will generally not exceed two-thirds of the annual tuition (i.e. the family will pay a minimum of one-third). If the case necessitates special consideration, the director may consult with the president of the board and/or with the school’s accountant.

A student’s financial aid allotment will be reviewed by the director each year. Although an attempt will be made to provide a family with financial aid for as long as assistance is needed, the total mount of aid is not guaranteed from year to year. A second or third child within a family that is already being given aid is not guaranteed aid; each child will be considered separately. Families need to be current on tuition payments for the current school year before being considered for financial aid for the following year.
